Restored and extended Arts & Crafts home

Michael Simmons

Hampstead, London

This special house was once home to a painter and also contains an unusual galleried music room. The individual crafted details such as door handles provided inspiration for this refurbishment.

The brief to update, restore and extend to provide space for an extended family of three generations. Space for everyone to express themselves.

Design Features

Glazed extenson

The house had lots of light and featured metal windows. The design challenge was to create an extension which would complement the style of the house but also provide a crisp modern open interior.

Period detailing

Many elements were handcrafted arts & craft style touches such as cupboard and door handles. We were able to collaborate with  craftsmen in Devon to reflect these in any new additions.

Bespoke additions

We were able to tailor designs to create a basement flat suitable for an elderly relative, a wine cellar, a quiet study and space for the accomplished musicians of the house to practice their craft.

A word from the Architect

“When your client buys a huge ornate fireplace, and I mean huge and gives you the challenge of working it into the design, it makes for an interesting discussion! But it is exactly the kind of quirkiness that this home’s story has always contained.”
